Karur is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities of Tamil Nadu. Celebrated in Sangam literature as Karuvur and Vanji, it is believed by historians to have been a capital of the early Chera kings. The city stands on the banks of the Amaravathi river, a tributary of the Cauvery, and carries more than two thousand years of unbroken history.

Karur became a separate district in 1995, carved out of the former Tiruchirappalli district. Today it is known across India as a hub of home-textile exports, bus-body building and paper manufacturing — and, for devotees, as a land of ancient temples, siddhars and sacred rivers.

Two Thousand Years of History

From the Sangam age to the modern district — the story of Karur through the centuries.

Sangam Age · c. 3rd century BCE – 3rd century CE

Karuvur of the Cheras

Sangam poets sang of Karuvur, which many historians identify with Vanji, the Chera capital. The Greek geographer Ptolemy (2nd century CE) mentions “Karoura” as a royal seat in the Tamil country.

Early centuries CE

Roman Trade on the Amaravathi

Hoards of Roman coins, along with ancient Tamil coins, found in the Amaravathi riverbed show that Karur was connected to the trade routes of the ancient world.

c. 2nd century CE

The Pugalur Inscriptions

Tamil-Brahmi inscriptions at Arunattarmalai near Pugalur record three generations of Chera kings — among the most important early epigraphs of Tamil history.

Chola period · 10th – 13th century

Temples and Royal Patronage

Inscriptions at the Pasupatheeswarar temple record land gifts from the reign of Rajendra Chola I. The Kongu Cholas and Kongu Pandyas also held the temple in great regard.

14th – 18th century

Vijayanagara and Nayak Rule

Under the Vijayanagara rulers and the Madurai Nayaks, temples of the region were expanded with mandapams and gopurams, and festivals flourished.

1995 – today

Modern Karur District

Formed as a separate district in 1995, Karur today balances thriving industry with a deeply rooted temple culture.

The Name and Legends of Karur

Where Creation Began

Tradition holds that Lord Brahma began the work of creation here — “karu” meaning the embryo or origin — giving the town its name, Karuvur.

The Divine Cow

Kamadhenu, the celestial cow, is said to have worshipped Lord Shiva here; hence He is called Pasupatheeswarar and Aanilaiappar.

The Siddhar of Karur

Karuvurar, one of the eighteen Tamil siddhars, is associated with Karur. His Thiruvisaippa hymns are part of the Ninth Thirumurai.
